He was born October 14, 1942 in Oak Park, IL, the son of late Eugene and Florence McCormick. He was the oldest of four siblings. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Elizabeth Wetzel McCormick.

He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, known as Kings Point, in 1964 with a BS and from Northwestern University in 1969 with a MS. He began sailing for Lykes Bros. Steamship Co. in 1964 and rose to its President and COO. He served in the Naval Reserve. In 1994, he left Lykes and founded the maritime advisory firm McCormick Jahncke Group with Barton Jahncke.
