Frances “Fran” Gable Villere, 74, died of cancer, surrounded by her loving family on November 10, 2018. She was born on April 8, 1944 to the late Philip W. Gable and Marguerite R. Collier and was a native of Palm Beach, FL.
Fran graduated from Finch College in 1966, and relocated from New York City to New Orleans in 1967 with her husband George. It was here that she would build relationships to last a lifetime, beginning with her sister-in-law, the late Mathilde Villere Young. New Orleans would be the beneficiary of her tireless volunteer work. Fran would go on to commit time, energy and resources to many non-profit organizations including United Way, Junior League, Kingsley House, Make a Wish Foundation of Louisiana, The Volunteer and Information Agency, Longue Vue House and Gardens, New Orleans Botanical Garden, St. Elizabeth’s House, Audubon Nature Institute, Metropolitan Area Committee, the Catholic Foundation, Louise S. McGehee School, Isidore Newman School, the Association of Junior Leagues, Save our Cemeteries, Project Lazarus, Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Louisiana Children’s Hospital. Fran served in numerous leadership positions and was a dedicated fundraiser but that did not stop her from getting involved in the hands-on work of these organizations. For her efforts she was awarded the 2003 Times-Picayune Loving Cup Award.
Fran was an avid art collector, reader, world traveler, and raconteur with too many friends to count. She adored her family, bragging about them constantly, but above all else treasured her loving husband, George, whom she missed every day since his passing in 2016.
She is survived by her daughter Mathilde Villere Currence, her sons Christopher Deschamps Villere and Lamar Gable Villere, son-in-law Richard Morrison Currence Jr., daughter-in-law Michelle Bauman Villere, and seven grandchildren Lucille Caliste Currence, Frances Villere Currence, John “Jack” McDonald Currence II, Cora Jane Villere, George Bauman Villere, Molly Logan Villere, and Mathilde Bernard Villere. She is also survived by her brothers Phillip Lamar Gable, Barron Gift Collier, III, and her sisters Phyllis Alden and Toby Gable Keller. She was preceded in death by her husband George.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1025 Napoleon Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115 on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 11:00AM. Visitation will begin at 9:00AM.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Fran’s preference was for donations to be made to Kingsley House or Children’s Hospital.
