George Mentz

George Mentz, Sr. was born on October 8, 1921 in New Orleans, Louisiana and passed away peacefully at home with his children at his bedside on Saturday, May 9, 2015. He lived in Old Jefferson for the last 50 years. He was 93. Beloved husband of 62 years to the late Dorothy Mary Yokum Mentz. Devoted father of George Mentz, Jr., Arn Francis Mentz (Elizabeth), and Dorothy Anne Mentz. Son of the late Charles Nicholas Mentz, Sr. and Annie Carey Mentz. Brother of the late Elois Mentz Connelly, the late Henry Mentz, Sr., and the late Charles Nicholas Mentz, Jr. Grandfather of Bryan Charles Mentz (Carrie) of Humble, TX, Julie Mentz Cardella (Joseph, V) of Houston, TX, and Scott Andrew Mentz. Great grandfather of Allyson Reese Cardella and Andrew Joseph Cardella. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of S. J. Peters High School, attended Delgado Community College in New Orleans, and attended Loyola University in New Orleans. He retired in 1988 as an estimating clerk from Lykes Brothers Steamship Company after more than 35 years of service. Mr. Mentz was an avid woodcrafter in his youthful years. In his retirement, you could find him at home or at Lafreniere Park feeding the birds and ducks – a reminder of his childhood and early adult life. George also loved the visits from his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 1:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
