Gray Waxhaw Adams

On the night of December 10, 2025, I lost my son, Gray, age 51. This obituary is written in his honor. In keeping with tradition—and knowing him well—I will set aside my grief and simply share the story of his life for those who knew him but may have lost touch.

Gray spent his childhood summers working on his grandfather’s farm in Rosedale alongside his brother, Oscar, where he developed the strong work ethic that defined his life. He graduated from Cleveland High School and Millsaps College in Jackson, where he met and fell in love with Shelley Bradley of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Before their marriage, he earned a master’s degree in geology from the University of Mississippi.

Gray’s scientific aptitude, meticulousness, and integrity led him to a long and successful career with ERM, an environmental consulting firm specializing in large-scale remediation projects. He rose through the ranks to become a partner, though he always preferred the challenge of fieldwork.

Later, he joined OMS, where his expertise in environmental science, law, and safety regulations—as well as his extensive professional network—made him indispensable in managing large industrial projects. His colleagues described him as dedicated, highly knowledgeable, and deeply respected across the industry.

Yet Gray’s work, while important, was never the center of his life. His heart belonged to his wife, Shelley, and their three children, Mary Cooper (15), August (13), and Henry (6). A devoted husband and father, he never missed a chance to attend his children’s activities, take them fishing and sailing, or explore the mountains around their family cabin in Cashiers, North Carolina.

Gray loved cooking (often seeking advice from his brother, Andrew, a professional chef), reading extensively—especially in the sciences—and tackling any repair project with skill and enthusiasm. He remained close to his family and friends, regularly calling, emailing, and sharing life’s moments. I will deeply miss his wisdom, humor, and companionship.

Gray is survived by his beloved wife, Shelley; children Mary Cooper, August, and Henry; his parents, Dr. Jim and Signe Adams; brothers Oscar (Lale), Andrew (Emily), and Albert (Marissa); father- and mother-in-law Leo (Paula) and Charlotte (Ron); brother-in-law Edward (Karis); three loyal dogs; and many dear friends whose lives he touched profoundly.
