Born in New Orleans on August 2, 1927, Gerrie spent her early years in Palm Beach, Florida. At age fifteen, she moved back to New Orleans and attended Sophie B. Wright High School and LSU. During her high school years, she met and quickly fell in love with her late husband of sixty-five years, Allen Thomas Bremermann. Upon their marriage Gerrie embarked on her “first career” of raising three daughters and supporting philanthropic endeavors.
Gerrie possessed an innate creative prowess, an inimitable eye and an entrepreneurial spirit. What began as a business designing parties led to a renowned career as a leading innovator in the world of design that spanned forty-five years and extended into her nineties. As the proprietor of Bremermann Designs, a Magazine Street Interior Design Studio and Antique Shop, Gerrie rose to become a “style influencer” before the term “influencer” was widely used. She executed scores of commissions in New Orleans and around the country, her works being extensively published. In 2016, Southern Style Now created the Gerrie Bremermann Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her career and named her its first recipient.
Gerrie’s unique design signature reflected her deep love for New Orleans, its cultural heritage, music, food, galleries, gardens, lifestyle and houses. She created a palate that blended old-world charm with a contemporary flair, which marked the evolution of a modern, timeless New Orleans style. White roses; long, lush, yet simple curtains; unexpected objects; a liberal use of the color white (in décor as well as in her daily attire); and more created a look that was immediately recognizable as “Gerrie”. Her projects set a standard for generations of the design conscious.
Gerrie’s effect on colleagues, clients and friends was as powerful as her influence on style. Radiating a rare joie de vivre, she developed a personal rapport with clients, always teaching them along the way and adding a spirit of fun to any job. She nurtured bonds with the life-long friends she lovingly called her “old gang” while always remaining current, and constantly cultivating a legacy of deep multi-generational friendships. She possessed a down to earth quality within her world of exquisite taste. Those who worked with her - contractors, painters, architects, dealers and artisans – admired her talent and appreciated her knack for promoting their various and distinctive artistic abilities.
Her candor, keen wit and passion for quality in life and people will be missed dearly.
Gerrie is survived by her daughter Ann Thacher Bremermann Holden (August DiPalma Leopold); three grandchildren, Porter Reid Holden, Thacher James Holden (Leonila) and Aynsley Randle; two great grandchildren, Diana Izabelle Holden and Eli Gabriel Holden.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Allen Thomas Bremermann and her two loving daughters, Jane Bremermann Randle and Kimsley Allen Bremermann.
She was the daughter of the late Arthur Worcester Thacher and the late Geraldine Randolph Bond and the sister to the late Caroline Greene Thacher and the late Amelia Carpentar Thacher.
Eternal thanks are extended to her devoted caregivers, Blanca Gonzalez and Deanna Spers.
