Jack Kingsley Smith left his earthly life on Friday, February 9, 2018 surrounded by members of his loving family. He was 84 years of age and the beloved son of the late Clarence W. Smith and Frances Keller Smith. He is survived by his only sibling, Donald C. Smith as well as numerous generations of nieces and nephews. Jack spent his entire life in New Orleans, the city he loved.
His early education came from the Sisters at Incarnate Word and the brothers of St Aloysius School, and he remained a devout Catholic throughout his life. Jack graduated from Tulane University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to enlist in the U.S. Army Reserve as an officer achieving the rank of captain.
Blessed with a prodigious artistic talent, Jack began his professional career as a commercial artist and illustrator for Gus Levy. He went on to start his own business, Jack Smith Illustration and Design, eventually transitioning into fine art painting.
Being of German and French descent, Jack had a profound affinity for the Germanic language. This led to his many years as a member of the Deutsches House where he was instrumental in the planning and design concept of their new facility presently under construction near City Park. Inspired by his trips to Mexico, Jack participated for many years in Spanish classes and social events.
Although never married, Jack was endeared to his family and friends with the infectious enthusiasm and optimism he brought to life. He loved cooking, attending operas and symphonies, studying the city’s colorful history, and especially masquerading at Mardi Gras. He also enjoyed spending weekends at the serenity of his Gulf Coast home.
His passing brings profound sorrow not only to his brother but to the many nieces, nephews and friends who loved and admired him deeply.
All are invited to attend his funeral service and Catholic burial Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Visitation to begin at 11 AM with Mass following at 1 PM. Interment will be in the Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to Dr. Oliver Sartor and his staff at the Tulane Cancer Center for their affection and care.
