

Jeanne Finke “JJ” Bernard passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was 94. She was the loyal and loving wife of Peter L. Bernard, Jr. for 49 years. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, Jeanne was born on April 22, 1921 to Olivia Schreiber Finke and John Frank Finke, Jr. She met her future husband in kindergarten. Jeanne graduated from McMain High School and Newcomb College. A devoted wife, JJ was a nurturing mother who found her greatest pleasure in her large circle of family and friends. A bold, vibrant and energetic presence, Jeanne always welcomed those she loved into her home. She was a gracious and generous host, a spoiling mother and grandmother, and a fun and loyal friend. Everyone who was lucky enough to know her will remember her distinct laughter, her colorful style, and the twinkle in her eye. A true southern lady, JJ immersed herself into the community. She was active in the Parr Investment Club, Spring Fiesta, the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Salvation Army, and Cancer Crusaders. An avid supporter and philanthropist of the fine arts. Jeanne enjoyed her involvement in the Thursday Literary Guild and the Fine Arts of New Orleans. An enjoyment for adventure and travel carried Jeanne and Pete to destinations all over the world, including China, Antarctica, and Africa. She was a long time member of the Metairie Country Club, where she spent countless hours gathered with friends, enjoying bridge, good food, and her signature “toddie”. Her love of dogs, especially Boston Terriers, brought her joy. Her lush and beautiful gardens were a living representation of her endless energy, passionate patience and nurturing personality. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Louis Bernard, Jr., her brother, Henry Schrei ber Finke and sister-in-law, Louise Hutson Finke. She is survived by her daughters Jeanne Bernard Hurty (Charles Hurty) and Suzanne Lee Bernard (John Evans); her grandsons, Dr. Charles Albin Hurty, Jr. (Dr. Natasha Knight) and Blaine Bernard Hurty (Lindsay Hurty); five great-grandchildren; and her devoted caretaker and friend, Regina Roussel, as well as Catherine Bordelon, Shirleen LeBlanc, Rhonda Robert. The family expresses special thanks to Hearts of Hospice for their support. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the World War II Museum or a charity of choice. Family and friends are invited to the Memorial Service at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 10:00A.M.
