Dr. John James Signorelli passed from this life to the next on Sunday, December 27, 2015 in the midst of his loving family, enjoying, as always, the excitement and affection they gave him over the years. Words cannot describe how much he was loved and how greatly he will be missed.
He was born on September 19, 1920 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Dr. John and Nita DiCarlo Signorelli. After graduating from Jesuit High School, he attended Loyola and Tulane Universities. In 1943 he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from LSU School of Medicine and was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. He served his country with distinction during WWII.
Following the war, Dr. Signorelli maintained a large private practice in Internal Medicine in the greater New Orleans area and was also on the faculty at LSU School of Medicine. He was a member of both Hotel Dieu and East Jefferson Hospitals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Stansbury Signorelli and his parents Dr. and Mrs. John Signorelli. He is survived by his brother Joseph DiCarlo Signorelli, and his daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Arthur Schwartz and Carol and Bryant Wininger. He is also survived by his grandchildren Amy Manuel, Melanie Farrell, Derek and Lesley Wininger, Rebecca and Trevor Scott, and Christopher Wolfram and by his great-grandchildren Kara Manuel, Zoie Manuel, William Manuel, Maxwell Farrell, Alyssa Wininger, Brandon Tucker, and Caitlin Tucker. He also leaves his faithful dog Lulu who began her life with him shortly before Hurricane Katrina and was always at his side.
Our sincere and heartfelt thanks goes to Anna Brown who, for the last year, cared for Dr. Signorelli. Anna always went above and beyond the call of duty with elegance, grace, and the right amount of humor. She has not only become our friend, but also a member of our family. Dr. Signorelli’s family would also like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of My Hospice for all they did to ease Dr. Signorelli’s transition and who made his last months as pleasant as possible. In particular, we would like to thank Lisa Hinman and Barbara Groom who attended to his needs with kindness and understanding.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jesuit High School (New Orleans), Mount Carmel Academy (New Orleans), and LSU School of Medicine (New Orleans).
Private services were held on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lake Lawn Park. To sign and view the guest book, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
