Jerome was born and raised in Oneonta, Alabama to Minnie and Morris Kanter. He and his late brother, Philip, were the best of friends throughout their lives. His favorite childhood memories included playing on his high school football and basketball teams and playing trumpet in the concert band.
Jerome attended the University of Alabama, becoming a lifelong ‘Bama fan, before serving in the army during the Korean War. While at ‘Bama, he met the love of his life, Sandra Cotlar, and eventually followed her back to her beloved hometown, New Orleans. They married and settled in Metairie, where they raised their three daughters, and Jerome became the perfect “girl dad.” Their family eventually grew to include his sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who cherished him for his warmth, patience, fun stories, and endearing sense of humor.
That kindness extended to his work as a salesperson, where his magnetic personality contributed to his success.
With his extended family and many close friends, he shared his love of music (especially Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, and Louis Armstrong), and a passion for reading (his favorites were World War II novels and the poetry of Edgar Guest). He enjoyed long mornings golfing and cheering on his favorite sports teams, ‘Bama, Saints, and Pelicans.
He was adored by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Jerome was the doting husband of 62 years to the late Sandra Cotlar Kanter and is survived by his daughters, Cathy Bart (Morris), Wendy Rones (David), and Judy Lieberman (Glenn), grandchildren, Carrie Marks (Austin), Michelle Goehring (Jacob), Jennifer Kboudi (Elliben), Jason Rones (Melanie), Ryan Rones, Jeffrey Rones, Jordan Lieberman, and Mindy Lieberman, and great-grandchildren, Sam, Maya, Ari, Max, Alex, and Nate. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Alvin Cotlar (Dr. Ginger Rogers), his sister-in-law, Nomi Kanter, and cousin, Bunny Koock, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His family wishes to thank his generous team of caregivers, Geraldine Sims, Joycelian Sims, Cheryl McClain, Maxie Watson, Tachaye Patterson, and Cynthia Scott for their unwavering love and compassion.
