Larry was a lifelong resident of the city and embraced the whole mixed bag of New Orleans. He was born at Baptist Hospital in 1941, only leaving for Christ School in N.C., Centre College in Kentucky, and three years in the U.S. Navy.
When he returned to his hometown in 1964, he dove into Democratic politics, an enduring passion. He lived in the Pontalba in the French Quarter, and experienced the richness of New Orleans to the fullest. He retained that enthusiasm his entire life.
Larry worked for the family insurance and mortgage businesses, retiring as president of Eustis Mortgage in 2008. He liked the nuts and bolts of making deals work, whether arranging financing for an office building or raising money for a mayoral campaign. In all matters, he was tenacious and principled.
He was a good listener, but also a raconteur, especially with tales of Louisiana political characters.
Larry was immersed in the civic life of the city, serving on many boards, including the YMCA, Urban League, N.O. Public Library, and chairing the Downtown Development District and World Trade Center. He was a member of Rex.
In 1978, Larry married Karin Giger, a recent transplant from Boston. They had two sons and were devoted partners in love, family and adventure. Together, they all travelled widely to exotic corners of the world. Larry respected his wife, admired his sons, and found joy in his young grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Kate and Laurance Eustis.
He is survived by his wife Karin, son James (wife Heather and their children Morgan and Isabel) son Laurance Brittin, sister Kate Clark (Stephen) and brother Robert (Karen). Also, sisters-in-law Carla Giger Bond (Drew), Gigi Giger Matthews (Scott), 6 nieces and 1 nephew.
Funeral services will be at Lake Lawn Metairie on Thursday March 28.
Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Second Harvest Food Bank.
