Lois Brupbacher died peacefully at home on August 21, 2023 at the age of 96. She is survived by her children, Mary Antonini (Larry), Leslie Kramer (Bill), Chris Brupbacher (Neci), and Ellen Addison (Jay). Grandmother to Jonathan Kramer (Aimee), Katie Marcel (Jay), Benjamin Kramer, Christopher and Jacob Brupbacher. Great grandmother to Clark, Lila, and Coen Kramer, Dylan and Reese Marcel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Ethel Weil, husband, Ben Brupbacher, sister, Elaine Duvic, and her grandsons, Cyrus Barker and Justin Addison.
Lois graduated from Loyola University, training as a medical technician and working at Camp Leroy Johnson. After having children, her interests turned to local politics, progressive causes, and education, becoming a charter member of the League of Women Voters, the NAACP and the ACLU. Lois’ passion for civil rights led to her forming the Lake Area Public School Improvement Association with the goal of facilitating the progress of integration. This work inspired her to obtain a Master’s degree in Education at Tulane University, where she researched and wrote a thesis outlining the failures of integration in the New Orleans Public School System.
Along with her work as an activist, Lois traveled the world with her husband, Ben, frequenting the Yucatan Peninsula, where they explored the Mayan ruins and made lifelong friends. They trekked intrepidly through the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala, exploring ancient Maya cities to understand the wonder of their civilization.
Always curious and seeking knowledge, she led by example, keeping up with the latest developments in physics and astronomy and reading widely in history, religion, politics, and literature until her final days. She refused to let age hold her back, attempting to learn the piano while well into her eighties. An unapologetic progressive and a woman of science, she freely deployed her sharp wit against hypocrisy and stupidity wherever she saw it. But Lois’ unsparing intellect was coupled with an incredible capacity for generosity and a limitless compassion for those less fortunate.
We will celebrate her life on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 741 Topaz Street at 3:00PM. Please join us for a party in her memory.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Lois’ memory to the ACLU (www.aclu.org) or New Orleans City Park (www.neworleanscitypark.org).
