Mary Greenbaum Kinkaid was great at so many things. She was an awesome teacher, a great cook, who could've been a chef, a phenomenal wife and the greatest and most supportive mother anyone could ever ask for. Mary taught for 50 years and had a positive impact on countless people and not just in the classroom. Her biggest impact was at home on her son, Chris, and her husband, Ernie. Mary could not have been a bigger supporter of Chris and instilled values in him that will last a lifetime. When Ernie had a stroke in 2014, Mary did not hesitate and was absolutely tremendous in taking care of him and making sure he got to do everything. He got to participate in all of their outings like family vacations, parties and Pelicans games.
You could not ask for a better wife and mother. Mary, Ernie, and Chris are huge believers that you don’t turn your back on family. Mary was a bigtime competitor, a fighter and someone who could not love her family and friends more than she did.
Mary battled the effects of dementia for four years and nearly three months. Unfortunately, her fight ended when she passed away on April 2, 2025, at the age of 81.
Mary was a huge sports fan. She had Saints season tickets every year- except for two seasons in 1999 and 2000. Sundays in the dome were a must for her and Chris, so they made the decision to get season tickets once again in 2001 and they still have them. Mary was also a Pelicans partial season ticket holder for four years and full-season ticket holder the last two years. Despite the dementia, you could always find Mary at every Saints home game and nearly every Pels home game. Dementia was not going to stop her. It was always about having fun and working hard for her whether it was in the classroom, with Boy Scout Troop 35, cooking, at ballgames, at the zoo or aquarium, Mardi Gras parades or just enjoying parties and spending with the family and friends. She just loved life.
Mary is preceded in her passing by her husband, Ernie; brothers, Bernie and Jack Greenbaum; father, Tilden H. Greenbaum, Jr.; and mother, Mary Reil Greenbaum. Mary is survived by her son, Chris; and her brother, Tilden H. Greenbaum, III.
A huge thank you goes out to Mary's caregivers, her home health nurses, her primary care physician, Dr. Scott Acosta, her physical and occupational therapists, and the staff at Slidell Memorial Hospital.
A celebration of Mary's life – as well as her husband's life, who didn't get the proper sendoff because of the impending Covid lockdown- will take place on April 9, 2025 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, with visitation for immediate family at 10 a.m. and visitation for the general public from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Mass begins at noon and there will be a burial immediately following at 1 p.m.
In honor of Mary's love for the Saints, Pels, and Mardi Gras, attendees are encouraged to wear Saints, Pelicans, and Mardi Gras gear for the celebration.
This amazing woman will be missed tremendously, but her impact on people will be felt forever and will never be forgotten.
