Beloved husband of the late Carolyn Barraco Mouton for 50 years. Loving father of Byron Mouton (wife Julie Charvat), David Mouton (wife Nicole Mouton), and Michael Mouton (partner Sadie Kenzler). Adoring grandfather of Cecilia, Henri, Lucie, and the late Bella Mouton. Son of the late Hebert Mouton and Emelie Robin Mouton. Brother of the late Maudry Mouton Castille, the late Reo Taylor, and Elaine Mouton Robin.
After finishing high school in Arnaudville, Louisiana, Melvin relocated to New Orleans in pursuit of studies at Loyola University; in his newly adopted hometown, he soon met and fell in love with Carolyn. He was quickly absorbed by her family, and together they raised three boys and inspired the following generation of grandchildren.
Melvin had a prosperous life in accounting with several organizations but was most proud of his earliest years when working with the Federal Landbank of New Orleans, which aided farmers. When the bank relocated to Jackson, Mississippi, he supported his family by spending many early Monday mornings and late Friday evenings traveling between NOLA and that new office location. While those responsibilities required him to be away for the week, he was always home with the family for the weekend. When home, he was often gardening and volunteering to cut the lawns of elderly neighbors. His sons grew to appreciate his willingness to spend every minute of his annual vacation time repainting the house; his strong work ethic and commitment to the family were contagious. Those qualities have left a never-ending impression. Melvin never boasted about his accomplishments, had no interest in being the center of attention or the life of the party. He was a quiet, humble, selfless man who longed for his wife since the day she passed. He will be missed, but those memories shall live forever.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans. Visitation begins at 10:00 am and will last until the Funeral Mass at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow just a few steps away at All Saints Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, masses in his honor preferred.
