He is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Lynn Reilly Ives; two sons: Peter Butler Ives, Jr. of New Orleans, LA, and Clay Mitchell Ives (Katie) of Baton Rouge, LA; sibling: Dorothy “Debi’ Ives Dupuy (Peter); and many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Mitchell Ives, Sr., mother, Dorothy Butler Ives, brother, Charles Mitchell Ives, Jr., and sister-in-law, Mary VanDenburgh Ives.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Peter loved being close to the water. His early years were filled with the joy of sailing on Lake Pontchartrain. Later, as a devoted husband and father, he created lasting memories during summers and weekends spent at the family's Gulf Coast retreat, motoring across the bay in their Boston Whaler with loved ones.
When not on the coast, Peter spent countless weekends at Tiger Stadium, supporting his beloved LSU Football team. He loved to entertain friends and family and was known for throwing an annual Christmas party filled with a visit from Santa, good food, and holiday cheer.
Peter faced the world with extraordinary resilience and a positive spirit, despite being born with legal blindness, color blindness, and a sensitivity to light. With his signature dark glasses, he never allowed these challenges to define him, graduating from De La Salle High School and attending Louisiana State University. Peter dedicated his professional life to the family business, Ives Business Forms, Inc., where his leadership led him to the role of President. Peter also actively participated in the rich traditions of New Orleans carnival organizations and was a longtime member of The Pickwick Club, The Louisiana Club, Pass Christian Yacht Club, The Society of Colonial Wars, and President of The Sons of the Revolution.
Seeking the tranquility of the Gulf Coast, Peter and his wife moved to Pass Christian in July 2022. Their home became a welcoming haven for visiting family and friends from New Orleans, maintaining their cherished connections. In his final days, Peter found peace at home as his wife shared loving memories of their first meeting one Easter weekend in the Pass and their many years together. His devoted dog, Ginger, offered him comfort and loving companionship, a gentle presence by his side.
Peter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will occur on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, La at 1:00pm. A visitation will begin at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Peter’s name to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
