

Philip Porter Nolan, beloved son of the late Mary Nell and Ulisse M. Nolan, died peacefully in his sleep at The Sanctuary after an illness of several months. He was born on August 10, 1948. He is survived by his beloved sons, Col. Scott Philip Nolan, U.S. Army (Jennifer), and Robert Roy Nolan (Michelle), and his grandson, Kurt Nolan, son of Col. Nolan and Tiffani Nolan. He is also survived by his six siblings and their spouses: Nell Nolan Young (Robert), Marjorie Nolan-Wheatley (Julian), William “T.” Nolan II (Lynn), Jerry F. Nolan (Ann), Elizabeth Anne “Betty” Nolan Walsh (Jay) and Nancy Nolan Parsley (John), and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and step-family members. He is also survived by several cherished friends.
Called Phil, he attended Our Lady of Lourdes School, Jesuit High School (where he played football his freshman year – he was six feet, seven inches) and graduated from Alcee Fortier High School. He attended Nicholls State University. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy and left with an honorable discharge. In the Navy, he traveled the world and took great pride in his travels. He was also in the Merchant Marine. He was also a member of Metairie American Legion Post 175. Years later, he attended the UNO (University of New Orleans)-Innsbruck International Summer School program in Innsbruck, Austria.
Until Hurricane Katrina, he was the proprietor of Gypsy’s Café on St. Charles Avenue.
He will be remembered for his height (he was affectionately called a gentle giant), his pleasure in socializing, his sense of humor, and his great love of family, friends, and New Orleans.
A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. until service time.
A memorial gathering will be held following the Mass.
The family would like to thank Veterans Administration, Tulane Medical Center Hospital, and The Sanctuary, as well as the many family members and friends who visited him in his last days.
