Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Merida born October 4, 1982 passed away from Aplastic Anemia on April 27, 2023 at the age of 40 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ruben and Judy Orozco of Metairie, LA ; maternal grandfather, Bruce Iles of Galion, OH. She is survived by her parents, Edgar and Gerri Merida; sisters, Beth Anne Merida (Bryan Camp) and Abigail Labit (Michael S. Labit); nephews, Michael E. Labit and Nicholas Labit; maternal grandmother, Mary Anne Iles of Galion, OH and many aunts, uncles, and cousins spread out across the country. Becky had many friends who loved her and were active in her life including neighbors, the staff and students at Mt. Carmel Academy, the staff and clients at Magnolia Community Services, and the staff at Majoria Drug Store. Becky was forever a child of the 80’s. She loved the music, movies, and cartoons. When a song came on the radio she could tell you who sang it and when it came out, and loved talking 80’s with anyone who would listen. Becky was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome at an early age, and she and her close family enjoyed many happy years attending annual conferences with the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association USA. She also enjoyed the Prader-Willi Syndrome fall camps in Ohio for years, which just happened to be located near her maternal grandmother. Becky had a big heart and always wanted to donate her money to people and causes in need. She would never leave the grocery without donating food to the Second Harvest Food Bank. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Clark Alsfeld and Juliette Folse, RN, the Hematology staff at Ochsner Main, the 8th floor inpatient Oncology Unit at Ochsner Main, and Jamie Groby, RN at Hospice Specialists of Louisiana, also the staff and students at Mt. Carmel Academy, New Orleans, LA and the employees of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for holding Blood Drives in Becky’s name. Lastly, thank you to Uncle Dennis, and Uncle BJ. You loved our girl as much as we did, and we are eternally grateful. Memorial contributions can be made to Magnolia Community Services, 100 Central Avenue, Jefferson, LA 70121.
