Russ was a “Renaissance Man” and wore many hats (literally) in his lifetime. He was in the Navy and then a registered nurse practicing in the Emergency Departments at local hospitals. Russ was an award- winning artist. He was an actor who loved the stage and was a Master of improv and comedy. Russ was also an entertainer who played drums, keyboard, and piano. He earned the nickname Smiley Jackson – because his smile was contagious making many people smile with his impromptu piano sessions. He was also a photographer and a writer. Many evenings he brainstormed and wrote the most hilarious scripts with his friends and co-writers. He was also a playwright. Russ loved the outdoors and took hiking trips with friends savoring the beauty of nature. He also valued the friendships made with members of the the Mankind Project.
Those who knew Russ were blessed. His funny jokes, his positive attitude toward life, and his willingness to help those who needed a kind word, support or just a hug are the things that will be remembered.
Russ loved life, loved his dog, John Lennon, his parents and sister, Russell, Pauline and Nedra Thames, his niece, Ann Bagala, along with his many friends from all over the country.
Russ was loved by many and will be missed but we know that he will be waiting for us when it is our time to transition with that beautiful smile on his face and outstretched arms.
Russ transitioned from this world on February 14, 2021 – a day when Love is celebrated. Due to COVID, we were unable to hold services. We will have a Celebration of Life Ceremony and reception on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Service and interment with Second Line will be from 4-5pm with reception following.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Louisiana SPCA in lieu of flowers.
