Sylvia Stone Shushan passed away on April 6, 2025, at the age of 107. She was a strong and beautiful person who raised two daughters on her own after she was widowed at the age of 42. She married Shepard Shushan in 1948 and had a wonderful marriage with him for 14 years. Shep was a New Orleans native who knew there was no better place to live in the world. And once in the city, Sylvia agreed. Sylvia built their dream home uptown where they entertained their close-knit group of friends and family.
Following Shep’s death, Sylvia became the bridal coordinator for Maison Blanche on Canal Street for many years. She loved working with brides and their mothers and to this day women say “Mrs. Shushan married me.” She was also an active member of the Fashion Group. After Maison Blanche closed, Sylvia worked as the bridal coordinator at Gus Mayer. She next worked at Ruffles women’s clothing store in Uptown Square and then for many years at British Antiques on Magazine Street, retiring at 92. She made lifelong friends wherever she was.
She was on a first-name basis with every merchant and antique dealer in the French Quarter and loved jazz music and New Orleans culture. One of the parties she hosted for her friends was a production of One Mo’ Time at the Toulouse Theatre. Always elegant, Sylvia never skimped on clothes, although she saved S&H Green Stamps and clipped coupons religiously.
She is survived by her daughters, Elle Shushan of Philadelphia and Sally Shushan of New Orleans. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity is appreciated. Special thanks to and gratitude to the caregiver group who were so kind to Sylvia for many years: Kwan Nicholas, Carol Addison, Deborah Williams, Kim Nicholas-Junior, Anika Wilson, and Miranda Perrilloux, as well as Anvoi Hospice and Charlotte Bouthilette.
