

Thomas “Tom” Gerard Meyer, a Petroleum Engineer with the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, U.S. Department of the Interior, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the age of 70. Tom was born on April 16, 1955, in New Orleans. He was the beloved husband and best friend of 38 years to Diane Olivier Meyer. He was the cherished son of Patricia B. Meyer and the late Roger A. Meyer, and the loving father of the late Thomas John Meyer. He is also survived by his devoted siblings, Roger G. Meyer, Rachel M. Leggitt (Scott), Susan M. West along with extended family members and many lifelong friends who meant the world to him.
Tom earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Tulane University in Geological / Geophysical Engineering. He built a long and respected career in the petroleum industry and was proud to be a member of Geological Society of America and the American Association of Advancing Petroleum Geosciences. Tom was someone who truly loved learning. He was endlessly curious about the world, always reading, always asking questions, and always wanting to understand how things worked.
He had a deep love for aviation and was a licensed Private Pilot for both land and sea aircraft – something he took great pride and joy in. Tom was also fascinated by weather and had a special knack for forecasting, often impressing those around him with how accurate he could be.
More than any title or accomplishment, Tom loved his family and friends. He was proud of his homestead and the life he built there. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his intelligence, his curiosity, and the deep love he carried for the people in his life.
A visitation will be held at St. Rita Catholic Church, 7100 Jefferson Hwy., Harahan, LA 70123 on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with a Memorial Mass to follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Metairie Cemetery in All Saints Mausoleum.
