Ulysses Sylvain Florane, Jr. passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the age of 91. Ulysses was born on February 3, 1932 in the Holy Cross area of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. He was a lifetime resident of New Orleans and the suburbs of Arabi, Algiers, and Kenner.
He was the son of the late Ulysses Sylvain Florane, Sr. and Marie Piehet Florane. Brother of Lloyd Florane (Janet), and the late Michel Florane (Beverly). Father of Charlene Florane Reynolds and her husband, Grady Wayne Reynolds, Brenda Florane Macaluso and her husband, Terry Anthony Macaluso, and the late Guy Ulysses Florane.
Ulysses graduated from Holy Cross High School, and attended Tulane Business School and Vanderbilt Owen Management School. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Peggy Jo Charlene Florane, of 67 years. During his four year enlistment with the US Navy MSTS Far East Tour during the Korean War, they lived in San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA, with their first born, Charlene.
Grandfather of Jessica C. Reynolds, Angela N. Reynolds Hatfield (Bryan), Matteo P. Macaluso (Michaela), Mario J. Macaluso, and Giovanni P. Macaluso, and great grandfather of Wesley R. Hatfield.
Ulysses was a devoted employee and former Traffic Manager of Pellerin Milnor Corporation in Kenner, LA for 35 years. After retiring from Pellerin Milnor, he owned and operated USFI, serving the motor carriers as an independent inspector for over 15 years. He was a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish in Kenner since 1979, and a member of the American Legion Post 0401. He loved to sail and spent much of his free time on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain. His lifelong love of music, playing the sax and clarinet, was enjoyed by being a member of the Ken Veca Band, where both he and Ken were past members together of the Holy Cross marching band. He also played with the American Legion 175 band. He loved his family, which meant everything to him.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Singing River Hospital in Gulfport, MS, Avanti Senior Living in Covington, and Passages Hospice for their care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation for Ulysses on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, beginning at 1:00PM with the recitation of the rosary at 1:30PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the chapel at 2:00PM. The interment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum.
