Valentine Reinhard, “Val”, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents, August Reinhard and Angelle Pizzetta Reinhard; his sister, Genevieve Day; and his brother, August Reinhard. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty DeLerno Reinhard; son, Greg Reinhard and wife, Irina; daughter, Elizabeth Gary and husband, Mike; and daughter, Ellen Bourgeois and husband, Lance. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Abby-Lynn, Cameron, and Dustin Gary, and Taylor and Anna Katherine Bourgeois, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Val was born on April 21, 1936 in New Orleans. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1954 and then received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University in 1958. He married the love of his life, Betty Ellen DeLerno, in 1963. After a brief training in the Army Reserve, he went to work as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Navy for just over 25 years, taking early retirement when the base in New Orleans was closed down. Along with Betty, Val was a dedicated member of St. Angela Merici parish for over 55 years, where the couple served as lectors for many of those years. They also were beloved volunteers at the homeless shelter Ozanam Inn for over 20 years. When we wasn’t working, he was with his family, working on his home or yard on Clifford Drive of over 55 years, or relaxing in his hammock, on his boat, or on a beach in Florida, a cruise in the Caribbean, or hiking in the mountains.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 901 Beverly Garden Dr. in Metairie, on Monday, June 13, 2022 at 11:30AM. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10:30AM. The interment will follow the Mass in Metairie Cemetery. The Funeral Mass will be officiated by Father Beau Charbonnet, and Val’s nephews, Father Chris and Father Kevin DeLerno.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff and residents at St. Anthony’s Gardens in Covington, LA. While Val had lived at St. Anthony’s less than four months, he had been welcomed and loved as a family member by so many people. The outpouring of love and condolences to us by everyone there has been incredibly meaningful.
