“My heart and my flesh may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalms 73:26. Vera Alice Sable Berndt passed from this life on September 5, 2015. Her earthly body will be laid to rest, but with God in her heart, her spirit is still strong. Vera was married to Louis Just Berndt for 47 years before his death in 2005. Vera is survived by her five daughters: Wendy Sable Berndt Baham; Karen Ann Berndt Martin Eubanks; Becky Vera Berndt; Mary Alice Berndt Cooper; Cheryl Lynn Berndt Ortiz; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Vera is also survived by her brother John Maurice Sable. She is the daughter of Elma Alice Kemp Sable and John Leslie Sable. Vera graduated from Tulane University with a degree in accounting and became a certified public accountant. She worked at Kingsley House in New Orleans for over 35 years and ran an accounting practice from her home. Vera was a long-time active member of First Baptist Church in Kenner where she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. More recently she attended Metairie Baptist Church. “Mom was a shining example to us all through her life. Her love was unconditional, her family was her greatest blessing, her faith in God was strong, and she was richly rewarded. We thank Mom for teaching us our faith in God. Through our faith, we know her spirit is at peace. We were truly blessed to call her Mom. We know that our mother and father are reunited once again. Mom inherited a love of all things blooming from her mother. We recall endless weekends trimming azaleas and weeding gardens and countless scrapes on our hands and legs from tending to her rose garden. We can only imagine Mom’s gardens now--where her azaleas are forever in bloom and her rose bushes will never need pruning. Our mother held us in her arms as babies, she held our hands as children and as adults, and now she holds our hearts. We laughed with her, we cried with her, and we prayed with her. We love her deeply. We know Mom was put on this earth to be an example for all her girls, and she was hugely successful. Mom once said that whenever she walked up the walkway toward the front door, she could always hear Dad playing his horns from inside the house. She said that always gave her a sense of being home. We know in our hearts, as Mom passes from this life to her next, Dad will be waiting inside the pearly gates, playing his horns, welcoming her home.” Family and friends are invited to attend Vera's funeral service in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Friday, September 11. Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm with a chapel service at 1 pm, followed by a graveside service. To view and sign the Family Guest Book, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
