Dear Howat family, relatives and friends

My family and I want to express our sympathy on the passing of Grandpa Walter Howat and would like to share some thoughts about Walter and how much he meant to us and his neighborhood in San Diego. I don't recall the exact first time I met Grandpa Walter but I can say that he was always someone I looked forward to seeing and spending time chatting with in the cul-de-sac. He had a quick way of making everyone feel welcome, special and loved. I will always recall Grandpa Walter sitting in a chair in the driveway watching over a then younger Trevor and Emma while they played in the street. I can think of no better way to spend time than to simply be around one's grandchildren and watching them grow up. Despite the fact that Grandpa Walter and Grandma Judy lived some 2000 miles away, they made many trips to visit Scott, Michelle, Andy, Rebecca, Trevor, Emma and the many neighborhood surrogate grandkids.  

Walter had a unique ability found in few people to genuinely want to find out how everyone was doing, what classes did the kids have, who was their favorite teacher, what sports they were playing and many other small facts often overlooked by others. Walter was able to make everyone at ease and we considered him a surrogate grandpa for our sons, both of whom looked forward to seeing and talking to Grandpa Walter during their visits. 

Most grandparents love their grandchildren.  Some grandparents tolerate their grandchildren but would rather focus on their own lives, vacations, and adult friends. Grandpa Walter was a rare guy who not only loved his children and grandchildren but seemed to would have rather spend time with them than do anything else. This is a special thing I know many people appreciate and would like to think they would or could live their lives the same way.  

My mom died while I started my junior year in college. I was devastated but knew that she would only have wanted me to stay focused on school. A professor I had at the time had gone through the same thing when he was a younger man and when he heard that I needed a few days off to spend time with the family, he offered his experience and told me in his German accent Yah.you never get over it, but you vill get used to it. In time the sadness and feelings of loss vill be replaced by the funny stories and varm memories. These words have rung true for me ever since. I think that grief and sadness at someone's passing is the price we pay for the love we learned and experienced by their presence in our lives. Although it may not seem so, this is a small price to pay for a lifetime of love and memories we have been given by our loved ones.  

We will miss you Grandpa Walter, but someday we will see you again. I am glad that I knew Walter and feel like I am a better person for his presence in my life. I celebrate the man and inspiration that was and is Walter Howat and wish all those who were close to him many fond memories.
