

Ross, Cathrine Ruth; 100. Cathrine died peacefully, at home on Saturday, November 12th. Born Cathrine McCullar in Dallas, TX on September 12, 1911, she went to New York City as a young woman and travelled the Northeast as part of a dance unit that played nightclubs in major cities. Her work took her to Baltimore, MD in the 1930’s where she met and married Bert H. Ross. They were married from 1937 until Bert’s death in 1962. Cathrine studied oil painting during this time and became quite an accomplished portrait and still life artist. She was a proud member of the West Pasco Quilter’s Guild and the Hernando County Quilter’s Guild. She enjoyed many hours of fun and camaraderie with members of the Scarlett O’Hatter’s Red Hat Society. Cathrine earned an Honorary Doctorate from Nova-Southeastern University while attending and participating in their doctoral program (1984 – 1987) with her friend, Rae Hertz. She was a champion of education and volunteered for many years at the District School Board of Pasco County District Media Center and at the Media Center at Cotee River Elementary School. A Cathrine R. Ross Memorial Book Fund has been established at Cotee River Elementary School (7500 Plathe Road, New Port Richey, FL 34653) (make checks payable to Cotee River Media Center with Cathrine R. Cathrine is predeceased by her sister, Grey Crawford. Survivors include her niece Dr. Mona M. Counts, Mona’s husband; J.D. Yellets and her grandniece, Joy Nugent (Courtney) and great grandnephew, Grant. Additionally, Cathrine is survived by her friend of 44 years and her caregiver until the end, Rae G. Hertz. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and many, many dear friends. At Cathrine’s request there will be no services.
