He was born on May 13, 1931, in Berlin, New Hampshire, to Jesse and Viola (Paris) Bunnell.
Merle was raised on the family’s working farm in Milan, New Hampshire, where hard work, dedication, and a close family bond were the foundation of the Bunnell family. He was the last surviving member of his childhood family. He was predeceased by his siblings: Robert Bunnell of Salem, New Hampshire; Woodrow Bunnell of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Helen Montminy of Gorham, New Hampshire; Kenneth Bunnell of Newport Richey, Florida; Richard Bunnell of Exeter, New Hampshire; and Herbert Bunnell of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Merle shared 72 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Juliette (Vaillancourt) Bunnell. The joy, companionship, and love they brought to one another was truly unmatched. Together they built a beautiful family and raised three children: Gary Bunnell and his wife Diane of Manchester, New Hampshire; Diane Oikle of Stewartstown, New Hampshire; and Larry Bunnell and his wife Claire of Port Richey, Florida. He was also a proud grandfather and was blessed to be survived by 11 great-grandchildren, whose lives added even more joy to his later years. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
Like the rest of his immediate family, Merle served his country proudly in the United States military, including service during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he began building the family life he cherished so deeply. After settling in Manchester, New Hampshire, he worked for many years with the City School Department before continuing his career with City Hall as a maintenance professional.
What Merle enjoyed most in life was gardening. He lovingly tended many gardens over the years, growing vegetables that brought joy to his family’s table. He was a tireless worker who always found ways to provide for those he loved, whether through his regular work, collecting cardboard and recyclables, or taking on odd jobs whenever needed.
His love of family was at the center of everything he did. His grandchildren, Rob and Scott Vachon, visited him often in Florida, something he treasured deeply. Jeff and Lynne, who also lived in Florida, brought him great joy during family gatherings, which he always looked forward to. His trips north to spend time with Keith and Maggie were especially meaningful, as family meant everything to him.
No matter the distance, Merle never forgot his family and treasured every moment spent with those he loved. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. He was a truly special man who will always be deeply loved and fondly remembered.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity in Merle’s memory.
