Robert was a highly decorated veteran of the Korean conflict, during which he flew over 100 missions along with his brother, Hugh. The brothers, affectionately nicknamed the 'Dime Brothers', were talented pilots. Robert's brother Colonel Hubert C. Nichols, Jr. was shot down in Vietnam in 1966 and is one of less than 1600 Americans that are still unaccounted for.
During his enlistment, Robert was primarily based at MacDill AB in Tampa, FL, where he served as the pilot for the governor of Florida. After retiring from the Air Force, Robert moved on to a successful career as a computer programmer with the State of Florida in Tallahassee.
Robert was fondly known as known as Dad, Grandpa Bob, or Uncle Bob. He is survived by three sons, Mark, Brad, and Scott Nichols, six grandchildren, Jayne, Cassandra, Robert, Mary Beth, Brian, and Renee, and seven great-grandchildren, Marnie Cassandra, Grace, Adeline, Luke, Briar, Mila, and Layla.
He is preceded in death by his parents, H.C. and Marion Nichols, his wife, Shirley Nichols, two sons, Jerry and Tom E. Nichols, and his great-grandson Max Thomas Scanlon.
