Her parents were Pearl and Sherman Douglas. She was the sixth youngest of thirteen brothers and sisters. She is survived by her younger sister and brother, Edith Holsclaw (California) and Clinton Douglas (Ohio). Her previous husband, Chester Harris, Sr., preceded her in death.
Early in her career, she worked with computer data management beginning in New Jersey and later with Budlock Refrigeration in Evansville, Indiana. Later years, she worked at and retired from Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Company.
Dorma loved keeping up with friends and family by phone, text messaging and FaceBook. She was always watching over her family as it grew and as their lives changed throughout the years.
She loved gardening and “her” hummingbirds. Hummingbirds flew around her as if they truly knew how much she loved them. They circled and flew about her beautiful flowers as if to entertain her.
Dorma had many friends, acquaintances and good neighbors over the years. In later years, she was especially close to Dr. Shannon Lamb. Together they shared many meals, conversations and theirs views on the world.
She was well known for her energy, drive and enthusiasm for life. Whenever she made her mind up to accomplish anything—she was “unstoppable.” We will always remember her tenacity when facing life’s many challenges. By example, she set a “high bar” for her family to reach and follow.
Her true joy came from visits with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her laughter, hugs and advice will be missed greatly….but will be remembered by all.
Dorma is survived by her three children, Chester (Vickie) Harris, Jr. (Destin, Florida), Steven (Mellanie) Harris (Newburgh, IN), and Lynn (George) Dosch (Urbandale, IA). Her extended family includes 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
The family greatly appreciates the expertise, care, and valued assistance provided by Dr. Rebecca Raj and the physical therapists who helped uplift and sustain independent abilities.
To honor her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. We invite you to please privately celebrate Dorma’s memory in your own ways, knowing she will be with all of us in spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Warrick Humane Society, Newburgh, Indiana. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderNewburghChapel.com
