

Sylvia Smith, 90, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at River Point Rehabilitation Center. Sylvia was born Sylvia Angel, July 2, 1922, in Coney Island, NY to Bessie and Abraham Angel, married Charles W. Smith (who preceded her death) and raised three children: Phillip W. Smith, John L. Smith and Phillappa (Irish) Morris. She has six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and sister, Lottie Parker, Florida.
Sylvia led a very active life, working in a tailor shop after graduating from PS 80 High School in Coney Island, NY, and then as an elevator operator in the Empire State Building.
She also worked as a Grey Lady at the Evansville State Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital as a nurse’s aide and worked for many years for the Newburgh Senior Center where she helped raise funding to build the New Newburgh Senior Center where Warrick Seniors now attend.
She enjoyed the many years she spent Square Dancing and danced in Washington DC for the President of the United States. She served as Queen of the Newburgh Red Hat Society. She was very active in Shrine and was a member of Isis Temple 41 Daughters of the Nile and the Eastern Star.
Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Rev. Dan Kennedy, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Tuesday, from 1:00 to 8:00 PM, with The Isis Temple 41 Daughters of the Nile service at 6:30 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Hadi Shrine Transportation Fund.
