Barbara Cecelia Nickerson went to be with the Lord on Tuesday April 29, 2025 at 3:38pm afternoon. From Journeycare hospice inside the building of Rush University Medicine Center. 1620 W Harrison, 5th floor.
Barbara C. Nickerson was born in Chicago on June 27, 1951 to Edward J. Nickerson and Mildred L. Nickerson both have preceded her in death.
Barbara was born with a mental deficiency, but she was determined to learn and grow. She attended Lincoln Center and Ada S. McKinley, where she received support and education. At these schools, Barbara did many fun activities, just like other children. They went on outings to explore and enjoy new experiences together. This helped her learn everyday skills to become more independent.
Barbara was raised around a lot of family members. As her family grew, she spent most of her life with her four sisters, her only brother and their mother.
Barbara's life was quite similar to many others. She had a learning program that helped her, but that didn't mean she couldn't learn. She just learned at a slower pace than most people. Over the years, Barbara achieved important milestones, like learning to dress herself and put on her shoes. She also learned to eat without needing help. As a child and young adult, Barbara faced new challenges and enjoyed new experiences. Now, as a senior, she still took her time to dress and put on her shoes, but she did it all by herself. One of the best parts of our time together is when I would sing to her. She may laugh at my singing, but I know she enjoys it. Barbara's life shows that, no matter the pace, we can all learn and find joy in everyday moments. Each step she takes is a victory worth celebrating.
She was a small and petite person, and no one could believe she was a senior because her face looked so young. Her doctors were always amazed by how she managed to live her life despite her disabilities. They often wondered how she stayed so cheerful and full of life. The secret, we all knew, was the strength she got from her faith in God and the love of her family. Even on tough days, she would smile, inspiring everyone around her.
She leaves behind many loved ones who will cherish her memory. Her sisters, Imogen Nickerson, Dornitcha Nickerson, Iris Goldman, and Colleen Nickerson, along with her only brother, Lawrence Nickerson. Her nieces Karin McFall and Alexis Bradley, as well as nephews Nicholas Nickerson and Richard C Bradley. Her great nieces Nia McFall, Richelle Nickerson. Her great nephews Joshua Nickerson and Iassah Nickerson. Her sister-in-laws Patricia Nickerson and Mrs. Janice Nickerson. Her aunts, cousins, uncles, and all the rest of her family members will miss her dearly. Each person who knew her carries a piece of her spirit and heart.
Please join family for a Graveside Service taking place on Tuesday May 6th, 2025 at 11am located at Oak Woods Cemetery, 1035 E 67th St, Chicago, IL 60637. Family will be gathering and meeting at the cemetery office, once we have everyone together, we will go in procession to her final resting space.
