Dear Roberta and all my cousins in the Chicago and Kansas City areas. Marie and I were deeply saddened to hear of Dan’s passing.I have so many great memories growing up next door as close like a brother as a cousin can be. We did everything together. We played hard and learned from each other. I particularly remember and will never forget playing with Dan , his older brother Chuck and myself in an all Sirridge outfield in little league. Although life moved on and Dan’s family moved to Chicago, we gradually grew apart. But Roberta, I remember your wedding. I had mentioned to Dan I’d be there. We were married the day before and drove to Chicago from mid Missouri. We made it in time for the wedding. I will forever remember that day we were able to share with you both. So many good memories! I realize the times spent together with Dan and you and his family were special times for which I’m very grateful. I’ not surprised by the words about “ Uncle Dan”. He left a lasting impression on many. Dan had much to give and gave it freely. He will forever be in my memory. I remember our adventures and travels together with the fondest memories. From Arlington Racetrack to the shores of LA, Uncle Dan was my partner in crime.  During our Las Vegas trip, I took him on a roller coaster over 1000 feet high on top of a hotel. As the hail began to hit us, I looked over at him and asked "are you sure you want to do this?" With his eyes closed and his notebook clutched, he said "let's do this Nickman!" However, my favorite memory was the time we shared on the Hollywood Studio tour in LA. As we toured the movie sets and costumes, Uncle Dan nailed every trivia question. By the end of the tour, the entire group was calling him Uncle Dan. As we completed the tour, the guide stated that he always wanted an Uncle like Uncle Dan. Devoted, humble, kind, selfless and a man full of unconditional love....I am so blessed to have my Godfather, Uncle Dan. I miss you, I love you and I promise to always carry you with me on my travels both near and far. Nickman

My fondest memories of Uncle Dan are making time at Nordstrom while Auntie Roberta and Amanda browsed for clothes. He immediately struck me as someone who is always there for you. But it was after his departure from the earthly realm that I came to grips with the extent to which he showed interest in my family. My father’s apple orchard and rescue camel were his favorite topic of discussion, even after the two had passed away. That maybe cuz Uncle Dan was also raised on a farm in Kansas which I learned on one of our last chats as he fondly reminisced the fruits and trains passing by. I always wanted to introduce my father to him but perhaps they have already met and of course the camel as well on a farm in the heavenly realm. 

Uncle Dan's heart was so big he had room enough to treat me as one of his own nephews. When I was young he'd greet me with a larger-than-life bear hug, and more recently with a hearty handshake and an enormous smile. 

An Uncle Dan memory that will always live on is as follows: Dan escorted Nick, Christine, Amanda, and me on multiple rides across Great America theme park one very hot Chicago afternoon. Without knowing it, I became fatigued and dehydrated and passed out smack-dab in the middle of the park. Uncle Dan whisked me up and carried me in his arms, without losing track of Nick, Christine, and Amanda, into the shade and nursed me back to health. It was a scary event for me, but only for a few minutes because Dan cracked a joke, bought me a soda, and we were back on the roller coasters.

Thank you Uncle Dan... it was an honor to spend time with you.

Dear Uncle Dan,

My favorite memory of you will always be of you sitting in the stands at my high school softball games. I remember one game where it must have been like 20 degrees outside and off and on again freezing rain. No one was at the game, not even the umpires wanted to be there. Every other parent was sitting in their heated cars or left, planning to come back and pick up their daughters after the game was over. But not Uncle Dan, you just put on your orange hat and sat in the freezing cold stands with your notebook. Every time, I stepped up to the plate, you kept track of my stats, writing down in your notebook the number of my hits and calculating my batting average. It didn’t matter how cold it was or if it was raining, I always knew that you would be there. 

I often think back at those seemingly mundane life moments, wondering how different my life would have been had you not been there sitting in those freezing cold stands at my high school softball games. Growing up, it’s not easy being a young woman. You have a lot of self-doubts and routinely struggle with confidence as the rest of the world constantly judges and criticizes you. But I never struggled with self-doubt or a lack of confidence. I always was confident and believed in myself. Today I now recognize that I always believed in myself, because I knew that my Uncle Dan believed in me. The confidence I now have is the result of your belief in me, and I will carry this confidence with me for the rest of my life. Thank you Uncle Dan for always being there for me and sitting in those freezing cold stands in pouring rain and 20 degree temperatures. Everything I am today is because of your kindness, courage, and belief in me.

Dan was truly an earth angel! We are beyond blessed to have spent so many celebrations with him at birthdays and especially Fourth of July at our home every year.  We will truly miss you Dan but know that you are only a memory away.  The last thing you said to me was “When I see you again, I want to hear another story!”  He loved stories!  I’m sure legions of angels trumpeted you Home with the grandest of welcomes.  With love and gratitude, John and Joanne Macko

One of my favorite memories was when Uncle Dan protected us from a rogue firework during our 4th of July party. He was standing with a broom and was quick to react and knocked the firework away preventing it from hitting anyone.

Dan was a huge part of the Ensono family.  His deep historical knowledge of our customers will be greatly missed.  He was always able to add insight into the logic of how and why the system was configured as it was.  Dan looked out for our customers best interests and took his role as customer technical support to heart.   He leaves a huge void to fill.

Dear Roberta and Family, Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your most loved husband. I am sending thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. Take care of yourself.  

Dear Roberta, I am so very sorry for your loss.  I pray that your Dan’s memory will comfort you.  I was told once when a loved one passed away on Christmas Day, the gates of heaven were open and awaiting our loved one.  I know Daniel walked through those gates and was met by his parents and your parents.  They are now watching over you.
