John Stephen Gory, 63, of Lemont, Illinois, departed this world very tragically and suddenly. However, he peacefully leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a treasure trove of advice that will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Born in Chicago to Henry Sr. and Mary Gory, John mastered the art of telling it like it is and knowing exactly how to fix anything in your house — whether you asked him to or not.
John is survived by his children, Aaron (Shannon) and Andrea, who lovingly inherited his wit, resilience, and determination. His loyal canine companion Samuel will surely miss his steady supply of belly rubs and shared snacks. John also leaves behind his brothers and their families: Henry (Deb), Tom (Rudell), Michael Sr. (Sandy), and James (Theresa)—along with countless nieces and nephews who will forever cherish Uncle John's willingness to help them with any challenge or construction project they might encounter.
John’s legacy is further carried on by his grand pups, Sam and Frodo, who might be plotting their next squirrel hunt in his honor.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Sr. and Mary, who we imagine welcomed him to heaven with open arms — while simultaneously asking if he wanted a nut cup.
John had a zest for life that was evident in everything he did, he always saw the glass as half full. After his mom’s passing, he learned to bake “Grandma Mary’s” brownies and pistachio cake to perfection. He had an answer for any problem, would have the best cheeseburgers or steaks waiting for you after work (and always made the Bernaise sauce at Christmas), and would make even a trip to Home Depot seem like an adventure.
John’s greatest accomplishment was his two children, who have both honored his legacy in various ways – Aaron by also becoming a stationary engineer and Andrea by pursuing a life of service as an Emergency Medical Technician. However, he also leaves behind a legacy through all of the men and women he helped find jobs in the various unions, trades and organizations in Chicagoland.
Visitation will be held at Blake & Lamb January 16th and 17th from 4:00 - 8:00pm. Funeral services will be at St. Gianna’s on January 18th, visitation at 10:00 am and mass at 11:00 am located at 10233 S. Central Park Ave, Evergreen Park, IL 60805. Burial to follow at St Mary’s located at 87th Street & Hamlin Ave, Evergreen Park, IL 60805.
John’s parting words to us would likely be something along the lines of, “nuff said.” But a close second would have been an expression of his love and an offer to help in any way he could.
He will be missed, remembered, and celebrated always.
