John was the son of John and Mary L. Sharkey and Margaret Lampley-Sharkey. He graduated from Momence High School with the Class of 1974 and went on to earn his Doctorate of Mortuary Science from Worsham College, a profession through which he served families with dignity, compassion, and care.
In 1973, John began teaching karate through Sharkey’s Karate Studios, a passion that would shape not only his life, but the lives of countless others. In 1977, he became President of the American Karate Association, leaving an indelible mark on the world of martial arts. He founded and led Team AKA, one of the most prestigious sport karate teams in the world, and later helped lead the Sideswipe Performance Team. Through these teams, John traveled internationally, proudly entertaining and supporting U.S. troops deployed overseas.
To many, John was more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a father figure, and simply “Sensei.” His influence reached far and wide, and his generosity, guidance, and belief in others helped shape generations of students and black belts who will carry his legacy forward.
John was a lifelong member of the National Pigeon Club and the Kankakee County Fair Association. In his leisure time, he found joy on the farm, caring for his chickens and spending time in quiet reflection.
He is survived by his cherished dog, Dunkin; his sister, Julie (Bob) Dinkins of Momence, Illinois; his brothers, Tony (Debbie) Lampley of Momence, Illinois and Jim (Deb) Lampley of Bourbonnais, Illinois; his friends and business partners, Hunter B. Lyon of Chicago, Illinois, and Stephen Bratton of Naperville, Illinois; and his best friend, Juan Hernandez of Beecher, Illinois. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as many beloved black belts and karate students.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bob Lampley; his nephew, Adam Lamb; and his great-nephew, Jacob Lamb.
John Sharkey’s life was defined by service, discipline, and heart. His legacy lives on in every life he touched, every student he inspired, and every person who was proud to call him Sensei.
