Joe cut my hair as a kid up until I left Chicago (1969), he also would not let his dad(Charlie) touch my hair.  I only wish I could have had visited him a few times over the past 40+ years.  My condolences to his wife and children, I'll always remember you Joe.

So very sorry to hear of Joe's passing.  Needless to say, he was an icon of the neighborhood that many knew and called friend.  May memories and his grand legacy help you through this difficult time.

My father-in-law, Joe "The Barber" Baglieri, passed away on Friday February 27, 2015.  He was an amazing man who started working as a barber alongside his father on Wednesday March 1, 1944 at the tender age of 15.  He dedicated his life to making a living as a licensed barber to support his family and serve his community.  I met dozens of people at the wake who shared their "first haircut" stories and told me how much the community loved their barber.  This distinguished career lasted for a staggering 69 years.  Additionally, during that 69 years he worked, he only took 15 vacation days!  I am honored to have received the last haircut he gave at the shop on March 2, 2013.  Exactly two years to that last haircut, he was unfortunately laid to rest.
When I first started coming around to date his daughter, he asked me what part of "Itly" my family was from.  I gulped when I broke the news that I was Mexican-Irish.  To my relief, he laughed with his "Mutley laugh" that I would grow to love over the next 29 years.  He always told the story how his daughter brought home this "skinny kid with un-matching socks" to feed.  I was invited to their dinner table every night and enjoyed the conversations with this attentive family.  One day during a dinner discussion, her dad stopped me and asked, "Do you ever shut up?"  It was then that I realized that I was the one doing most the talking all the time.  He smiled and said he understood because coming from a family with 10 children I would have a hard time getting in a word edgewise.  
He gave me the greatest complement when he told me I was "like a son" to him.  He definitely treated me like a son as he was always free to offer unsolicited advice.  In the shop, when he had an audience, he would tell the neighborhood guys I was his son-in-law.  Then he would have the straight razor in a suddenly shaking hand by my throat when he would ask, "So how are you treating my daughter."  This would bring the house down every time.  I would be the recipient of about 300 free haircuts throughout his career.  It was special time with him I always cherished.  
He would continue to give me free haircuts in his basement even after he could no longer see well enough to do it.  During the last haircut in his basement, he started to laugh so hard his belly was shaking and he was gasping for breath.  Gina came running downstairs and asked what was so funny?  He said, "I can't see a thing."  Being on the receiving end of the haircut I laughed too because I knew he didn't need to see to cut my hair.  He ruined the moment by saying I should look for a barber who could still see.  A month later I called him to let him know I was going to get a haircut from someone else.  It was the hardest call I ever made to him.  He gave me the green light and I woke up the next morning all shook up.  I felt like I was cheating on him and was riddled with guilt. I couldn't focus and brushed my teeth with cortisone cream by mistake.  I drove to a local barber and could not get out of the car as I was paralyzed by fear.  After leaving and returning twice I parked the car and walked in.  The barber stopped cutting hair and looked at me and said, "It looks like you have just seen a ghost. "  I walked out and called my father-in-law one more time to get permission.  Haircuts would never be the same for me.
We were blessed to have a chance to say our goodbyes to him over the last two years. He was a very generous man and his slow deterioration of health provided an opportunity for us to try to repay this kindness.  No one likes to see a loved one suffer and struggle as they lose their independence.  It was hard to see him deal with his illness and witness the gradual physical decline.  But it was also reaffirming to see his loved ones step up to care for his physical and emotional needs to the very end.  
Before he retired, I was always worried he would be robbed at the shop or in an awful car accident on the way home from work.  I always prayed that he would make it home safe to his family.  He often told me that he wanted to die in his own bed in his sleep.  Thankfully, he passed peacefully in his own bed in his sleep just as he wanted.  For a man who took less than three weeks off in 69 years of full-time work as a barber, he is finally able to rest. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the multiple generations from the community he served.  I for one, was blessed to have such a great father figure in my life for almost 29 years.

Carmen, I never had the opportunity to meet your father, but if you are a reflection of him, then he must have been a great man! You have our deepest condolences and prayers. May God's peace find you at this difficult time in your life. Kevin and Shawn

Thank you to All of you for the kind words that you have for my Father, and for visiting him and praying for him. You are the reason that he never wanted to retire. I am sure that if his health would not had failed he NEVER would have left the "Ville". He loved it there, and all of YOU. You were not customers to him, you were his Friends! At home he would speak of all of you and how much he enjoyed your company. Everyone there was so good to my Dad always looking out for him. Canaryville is such a GREAT neighborhood and family. We cannot thank you enough. I am sure that now that my Dad is in Heaven, Saint Peter will now be known as the "Guy at the gate with the FLAT TOP!" And Jesus will have no choice but to have a "regular boys" both with the great smell of Jerris Hair tonic. One of my favorite aromas. You smelled the "Jerris" and you new Dad was home:)

What a beautiful tribute to "dad" today, I'm so blessed to have the Baglieri family as my adopted family.  Marietta and I became sisters when we were 7 years old,   and Mom and Dad took me in as their own.  I'm sure dad has a long line of people waiting for haircuts.

Joe, was the Historian of Canaryville . I enjoyed sitting in his Office and discussing families and who was married to whom . He knew dates, times , grandchildren, occupations, addresses and the health of all. He was such a gentleman and NEVER had a bad word for anyone nor did he complain when he got sick. He will not only be missed by his family but by ALL of us who sat in the chair in his office and joked with him. He always gave you a smile when you exited and that is how I choose to remember my friend JOE.

Rip joe, my dad started going to you in 1967, then my brother in 1970 then my two boys in 1987 and 1992.I loved your stories and you where so great with the boys. I remember bring my boys to get their hair cut and you asked me where you living now, and I told you Ohio. You where the one I trusted with my boys. So worth the trip. ((Hugs))
