

Mary Frances (Fishburne) Gast, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, in Eagle River, Wisconsin. She was 100 years old.
Mary Frances was born on December 14, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois. Her remarkable life spanned a century of profound change and progress, during which she left an indelible mark on her family, community, and profession.
A trailblazer in the real estate industry, Mary Frances served as President of The Chicago Board of Realtors and was a respected owner-broker at Doris Brown Real Estate. Later in her career, she continued to excel as a broker with Berkshire Hathaway. Her dedication and leadership in the field earned her widespread respect among her peers and clients alike.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mary Frances had a deep passion for music, dance, theater, and travel. She embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity, exploring the world through numerous adventures that included several African safaris and especially Williamsburg. Her love for the arts and travel enriched her life and inspired those around her.
Mary Frances was devoted to her family and cherished her role as a mother to her three daughters: Maria Cronin, Karen Gast, and Patricia O'Connell. She took immense pride in her grandchildren—Nicholas Stapleton, Jonathan Stapleton, and Mellissa O'Donnell, Katie and Christine O'Connell—and found great joy in watching her great-grandchildren—Dylan Stapleton; Rylie; McKenna; Brady Stapleton; and Caitlin Mangan—grow up.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Gast; and her sister, Virginia (Fishburne) Altman. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Mary Frances will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, unwavering dedication to her family and career, and the joy she brought to those who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to share in her extraordinary journey.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on May 20, 2026, from 10:00 AM until time of Memorial Mass at 12:00 PM at St. Barnabas Church 10134 S. Longwood Drive, Chicago, IL. 60643.
