Richard P. Flanagan age 85 of Oak Lawn, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Deborah (née Comiso). A loving father to Linda (Greg) Vahl; cherished grandfather to Savannah, Sierra, Gregory, and Charles—each one treasured in his heart. Though his brother Michael (and Michael’s wife Marie) passed, he was a dear brother to Patrick (and his wife Rosalyne) and Kenneth (with his wife Cheryl). Fond uncle to his seven nieces, one nephew, and cherished great-uncle to many. Many other relatives and friends, blessed by his warmth, will also hold his memory dear.
Richard graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Grammar School, continued his education at Leo High School, and furthered his studies at Loyola University. He dedicated 39 years of his life serving the public through his steadfast work at the U.S. Postal Service—a true example of commitment, reliability, and quiet service. Richard was a voracious reader, always with the Chicago Sun-Times in hand. He had a lifelong passion for sports: watching games, following outcomes, and yes—engaging in the light-hearted thrill of sports betting. Richard was an avid chess player, whose love for the game was an enjoyment throughout his life. The intellectual pursuit of the game, and passion for chess will be fondly remembered by all who shared the experience with him.
