Benjamin Chavez, a long time resident of Oceanside, California, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, at the age of 64. He was born on September 5, 1961, in Villa Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, to Jose Angel Chavez and Juana Chavez.
In his early years, he cultivated not only gardens but also dreams, showcasing an entrepreneurial spirit and becoming an exceptional salesman. From music to plants, Levis to candy, his business ventures were diverse and successful. He also championed small businesses in the community, driven by a desire to see others thrive. He was actively involved with the California Soccer Association-South Inc league and was the head coach for the "5 de Mayo" men's soccer team. His favorite major league soccer team was the Chivas de Guadalajara.
Benjamin married the love of his life, Isabel Nevarez Chavez. They were together for 44 years and built a beautiful life based on true love, compassion, patience, and understanding.
His greatest pride was in raising his three daughters, instilling in them a strong work ethic and independence—a legacy of love and devotion. His approach to parenting was unconventional. On any given day his daughter's would be helping him change oil in a car, nailing down shingles on a roof, painting, laying down tile, picking fruit and vegetables from his garden, and writing checks for bills before they were in middle school.
He loved his grandchildren deeply, Benjamin Herrera, Elizabeth Herrera, Sebastian Acosta, and Joaquin Quiroz IV and was lovingly referred to as "Tata," "Apa," or "Papi".
Furthermore, he is described by many as a good man, funny, caring, and a proud Pirate from Oceanside High School. Always opening up his home to family in need. He had a passion for classic cars. Additionally, he had a green thumb and could grow anything. He loved to cook, especially pizza! His home was always filled with music or birds chirping in the background.
His life is a testament to love for family and an unwavering drive to never give up. He will be missed and never forgotten. May he now rest in peace and in our hearts forever.
He is preceded in death by Jose Angel Chavez (father),
Jacinto Nevarez Garcia (father-in-law), and Librada Lizarraga Nevarez (mother-in-law).
He is survived by Juana Chavez (mother), Isabel Nevarez Chavez (wife), his daughter's: Susana Herrera, Maria Isabel Chavez, Lus Maria Calderon, and four grandchildren. His brother's and sister's: Eloísa Hurtado, Catalina Pinedo, Daniel Chavez, Maria del Refugio Childs (Cuca), Maria del Jesús Pena (Chuy), Maria del Rosario Smith (Chayo), Angel Chavez, and Herminia Willis (Pina).
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and family for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in their final days.
A visitation and funeral mass will be held on June 8, 2026 from 8:00am-10:30am at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel in Oceanside, California. The burial will follow after mass at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, CA.
