Lt. Colonel Charles Richard Stiffler, a resident of Carlsbad for 50 years, passed away comfortably in his home Thursday morning September 14th, 2017 at the age of 86. He was born on November 11, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA. He spent his life with his beloved wife Joyce Stiffler and spent 63 wonderful years together and had 4 children; Richard, Leslie, Ross, and Karoline. In addition to his children, he is survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Charlie and Joyce met back in 1946 at Rahway High and were inseparable their entire marriage.
One of his greatest passions in life was his family, witnessed in his steadfast work ethic where he provided for them by serving 20 years in United State Marine Corps and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973. Retirement did not last long though and he began a second career with the North County Transit District, retiring again after putting in over 20 years of service. No matter how busy he was with work, he always made the time for every baseball game, soccer practice, gymnastics tournament and made sure his family was his top priority. Another passion in his life was football. Although mostly a quiet and reserved man, he couldn’t help but get riled up on Sunday watching the Steelers. He was one of the most selfless, giving, and caring people who was able to connect with everyone he met. He spent his life trying to be the best version of himself-the best son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather- and he succeeded, but also became a true champion for the ones he loved.
