Dorothy “Dottie” Alice Lamb, 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and beloved friend, passed on June 30th at Saint Paul’s Nursing Home in San Diego, California.
Dottie earned her nursing degree at Pasadena City College in 1942 and served as a Trauma Nurse for Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena until 1949. She retired upon giving birth to her first of two sets of twins in November of 1950.
A dedicated mother and wife, Dottie was actively involved in her children’s lives and in many local civic and charitable organizations throughout her children’s school years. She was instrumental in the development of California’s first “Help Line” providing emergency services to people in distress and served as a Nurse Volunteer to three elementary schools in the Los Angeles City School District.
She spent the remainder of her medical career as the Assistant to the Dean of Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, California until her retirement at the age of 83. When asked why she chose to work for so long, she replied, “Because they needed me and I loved all of the students.”
Dottie loved her little home in Oceana, located in Oceanside. She loved her neighbors, tending to her gardens, her cat, Miss Nova and the many yard birds that visited her feeders, including a regular flock of crows! She was an art lover and avid reader.
She will be dearly missed by all and remembered as a kind, loving and intelligent family member and friend with a joyful personality and sweet, generous nature.
Dottie is survived by her son, Stephen Roake (Laura), and daughters, Kathryn Pratt Salyer, Tracy Roake and Natalie Leu (Sam); her grandchildren, Cynthia Ceres, Jennifer Kolch, Forrest Webb, Dawn Webb, Joshua Roake, Rebecca Stininger, Abigail Lyons, Emily Macias, Amanda Leu, eight great-grandchildren and, one great-great-grandchild.
