Evelyn Blue Pace, 94, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2015, at her residence in Gladstone, Oregon. A longtime resident of Carlsbad, California, she and her late husband, J Blair Pace, MD were involved in all aspects of the community, including schools, library, civic organizations and medical services.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, Douglas Blue and four children, Glennellen Pace (Robert Paulson), Donna Pace, Jonathan (Arleen) Pace and Wilson (Carol) Pace. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Antoinette Brun, Tanya (Jakob) Bluestone, Sandor (Ceci) Winkler, Heather (Jesse) Forth and Kent (fiancé Jennifer and her son Micah) Pace and three great grandchildren, Nina, Clara and Mateo. She leaves behind many other relatives and close friends who will miss her.
Evelyn was born August 10, 1920, in New York City. She graduated from Birch Wathen School in 1938 and from Northwestern University in 1942. She married Blair Pace in 1942 and left her East Coast city roots to embark on her journey to the west, settling in Carlsbad, CA after WWII, with her husband the beloved local family doctor. They raised four children there, as well as many a dog, cat, horse, cow, chicken, rabbit and small farm animal. Evelyn received a Masters Degree in Library Sciences from the University of San Diego in 1969. She loved books and worked in the Carlsbad California Public Schools and the La Habra Public Schools as a librarian. She was an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer for community activities. She helped found the Tri-City Hospital with her husband, Blair, and served as the first President of the hospital volunteer organization. She was an avid supporter of international exchange and learning and actively worked with and supported American Field Service and Rotary Club International VISA Exchange programs. She hosted four students from four countries over ten years while living in Carlsbad. She was instrumental in establishing the Carlsbad Public Library, serving in several volunteer leadership positions. After moving to Orange County, she volunteered at Santa-Ana Tustin Community Hospital. She returned to Carlsbad with her husband’s retirement in 1979. Following her husband’s death, she moved in 2007 to the Atlanta, Georgia area to live with her daughter, Donna, followed by a move in 2013 to the Portland, Oregon area to be near daughter Glennellen.
Arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the following, or to a charity of choice.
