Haruko and I shared the love of plants and animals. We became soul mates soon after Eddie and I moved next door, on a quiet street in north Oceanside. Haruko became our biggest fan, within days of moving here, even though she had never known "surfers" before. We bonded quickly after learning we shared a love for the Teri Cafe lunch menu, among other things. The three of us would go there for lunch, on a week day, when the crowds were light. She adored the "Aloha Roll" and we ordered the "Oceanside Bowl", every single visit. She often shared her amazing Japanese dishes with us on intuition, or if she heard we were ill. Over the past 5 years, Haruko's garden and our garden shared a lot of plants, due to a successful "exchange" program. Haruko's energy was expressed in her love of flowering plants and she took pride in her ability to propagate almost anything, from a small cutting. We loved to see her walking the neighborhood every morning either alone (the "big walk") or with her small dog, Ruby. When I volunteered for the medical department of the Humane Society of San Diego (Oceanside Campus), Haruko was thrilled to provide what seemed like an endless supply of little dog beds, fleece blankets and harnesses to the cause. With enthusiasm, she supported my work as a foster parent to shelter dogs, too. When Haruko wasn't well or felt sad, I sensed her pain without need for her to tell me. We were soul mates and I cannot say enough about the affect her strength and special wisdom had on my life. 

Haruko will be missed!  She was the sunshine in our neighborhood.  She won our hearts with her smile,  her love and dedication to her sweet Ruby and her positive outlook!  I will remember her for her warmth and sweet words, she said to us, almost daily:  “You beautiful people, have a beautiful day!”  Rest In Peace, Haruko.  Thank you for being a part of this wonderful, caring neighborhood.  We will miss seeing your sweet face every day.   Thanks for the memories.    Carol and Walt
