Kay was born in Grafton, North Dakota the only child of Jim and Alice Cayley. She went to a little one room schoolhouse where one teacher taught all six grades. It was not Cayleys cup of tea because she was dyslectic and left-handed. To complicate things the teacher tried to make a right-hander out of her, which completely confused her. She was able to salvage her education by going to an all girls' boarding school in Minneapolis named Holy Angels. From there she went to North Dakota State but after a year her consular advised her to leave school and catch a husband.
The fishing wasn't that good in North Dakota so she was considering joining some of her friends who had moved out to California but decided to be a contestant in The North Dakota State Potato Queen Pageant. She became the 1955-1956 Potato Queen.
She then moved out to California where she took a class on "How to Catch a Husband" and was successful. His name is Harold Kutler and they have three children and two grandchildren.
In 1976 they experienced Mother Theresa and they were so impressed that they decided they too wanted to help the poor so they opened a little soup kitchen, Brother Bennos Kitchen, 1983 in downtown Oceanside which has grown into a large center that serves the poor and homeless. For her loving work and hundred thousands of hugs she was given the Holy Angels first Angeles Award and she was indeed an angel who joined Brother Benno up in heaven.
