Lee was born on November 20, 1935 to Howard and Louise in Bakersville, North Carolina.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, she went on to teach in Borrego Springs. She then moved to Santa Ana, California to teach in Santa Ana College. While teaching, she went to school to obtain a master’s degree in Arts and then a PhD in Human Behavior. She went on to become the Dean of the English Department at Santa Ana College. She also taught at University California San Diego and US International University, where she also became a Dean in Humanities.
In 1983, Lee met her long-time partner, Gilbert Quintos in Oceanside, California.
