Marian Laning was born in Pennington, New Jersey. She was the younger daughter of Henry and Sara Mae Laning. Her sister was Dorothy Laning. Marian wrote much over the years about her life as a young girl in the early 20th century.
She was graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1929 with an English major and a minors in French and Education. She taught school for several years until her marriage to Edward N. Worrall in 1933. After they were married, they lived in York, Pennsylvania. At that time, a week's salary was $35 as was their monthly rent. Their first home a few years later cost $ 6,000.
Marian and Edward had two children, Carolyn and William. Eventually, in 1956 they moved west from Pennsylvania to California. First living in Los Angeles, then moving to Oceanside and finally, in 1970, they moved to Escondido. Marian's husband of 49 years, Edward, passed away in 1982.
Among her many hobbies, Marian loved to play Bridge. Over the years she played with neighbors and then with friends at The Springs of Escondido, where she lived for 10 years.
Marian also researched her family's genealogy. She considered this very important work and she produced volumes, tracing the family lines back nearly a thousand years. Along with the genealogy, she wrote a history of her life and times. She also wrote poetry, knitted, and loved the acquisition of knowledge throughout her life. In her later years, she loved playing trivia games with the other residents of The Springs and more recently, Redwood Terrace.
Marian was legally blind for nearly half her life. She never let that stop her from doing things that interested her. She traveled with her husband to Europe, Australia, and the Pacific Islands over the years. Reading had always been important to her. Since it was difficult to see well enough to read, she received "Talking Books" from the Braille Institute for decades.
