Six months later they moved to Carlsbad, CA where Matt grew up with many wonderful friends and great treasured memories with them.
He attended Buena Vista Elementary School and Valley Junior High School. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1988.
Matt always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Even at a young age he would take a box of pencils or a box of candy bars and sell them to the other kids at school to earn money. He always said he liked collecting dollars.
In 1995, he purchased his own business, Gold n’ Baked Hams in the San Diego/Point Loma area after already having been an employee of Golden Baked Hams in Encinitas several years prior and then in August of 2000, he purchased that very shop in Encinitas which he was totally excited about. He eventually sold the San Diego shop concentrating only on the Encinitas shop.
To his dismay as the economy started to crumble in 2008 he struggled to keep things afloat, reluctantly having to sell the Encinitas shop in 2010. He was saddened by this because he really cared about his employees and customers knowing he would miss hanging out and talking with them.
However Matt, always the resourceful one, found that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. He had already been doing business/storage auctions on the side, selling on eBay and going to the swap meet. Then in 2011 he started working for 1-800-Got-Junk which he absolutely loved doing because every day was a new adventure for him and he enjoyed working with all the guys on the job.
In January 2006, Matt married his “honey-honey”, Joely who he had told his parents was “the one” after their first date back in 2000 and two years later they were blessed with Jacob who was absolutely his best buddy and completely proud of himself upon changing his first diaper.
Matt loved pizza, fishing, camping, dirt biking and shooting cans in the desert, but his passion was gardening. He loved growing fruits and veggies. He always figured if it didn’t produce something he couldn’t eat, it wasn’t worth planting and he credits his love of gardening to his dad, Bill, who he considered his hero.
Matt was loved by many and will be missed most especially by his wife and son who were his whole world. Joely and Jacob take comfort and peace knowing they will all be re-united once again with the Lord in Heaven.
Joely is asking that if you could take a little time to write or type up something to send to her on how Matt touched your life. She wants to gather it in a notebook to share with Jacob as he gets older on what an incredibly special Daddy he has.
