Mitchel was born in Oceanside, California on a beautiful southern California morning. He came into over lives with a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eyes. As the youngest of three boys, he was quick to rise to the challenges of life, trying to be like his big brothers. It was clear, even at a young age, how special he was.
Mitchel wanted to grow up and be like his brothers and go to school as soon as possible. He went to preschool at Casa Montessori, and through second grade a Montessori Arts and Sciences school. Mitchel started third grade at St. Patrick School. Even though he started later than many other students, Mitchel was quick to make many friends and personal connections at St. Patrick. Mitchel did well in school and was liked by his teachers and classmates for his positive attitude. Mitchel participated in the regular school and church activities, and he often played guitar at Mass and other events. Mitchel loved school event days where he was always at the front of the dance group on the basketball court for the goofy group dance of the day. He had a great time on school trips like Space Camp and the Washington DC trip. Whatever it was, Mitch was up for it.
Mitchel was good at sports. He played multiple years of Carlsbad Youth Baseball, loving his time at Chase field with his friends from his school. Mitchel, with friends from St. Pats, joined the local boy scout troop. Mitchel enjoyed camping, hiking and other boy scout activities and trips. Mitchel ultimately graduated from St. Patrick middle school in 2016 and headed on to Carlsbad High School.
Even though going from a small school to a huge high school was a big change, Mitchel was ready and excited for the challenge. Once Mitchel got to Carlsbad, he quickly expanded his group of friends, and he thrived at his new school. Mitchel made many friends in his classes, and through his music. Mitchel, at a young age began to play piano, and eventually became a very good musician and an accomplished guitarist. Through his music, he developed many more friends in high school. Mitchel joined the acoustic club as a Freshman and was the president of the club until he graduated. Many people came to acoustic Jams and Pizza sessions at the library. Mitchel was a member of multiple bands, including, Park Trips, Shangrila, Home Base and On The Menu. Mitchel attended the Berkely School of music summer programs in California and in Boston. Mitchel was inspired and amazed by the musicians at Berkely and he learned how to play and collaborate with other people, not just play music. Mitchel played many birthday parties, holiday and others shows. He went on to record and have listed multiple songs on Spotify and YouTube under Park Trips, including his newest song under the title “The Storm”, under Mitchel Palmer, aka MICHOLA.
Regardless of how busy he was, or what he had going on in his life, Mitchel always took the time and initiative to help people who could use an ear, or a hand up in some way. Mitchel’s great sense of empathy and sympathy were not things which he just felt, they were things which he acted on. It was very common for Mitchel to go out of his way personally to help others, for which we are eternally proud. Mitchel made our home fun and would often have his friends over our house for music, or to hang out and be kids. On a Saturday mornings, we often found a kid sleeping on every sofa or open space around the house, and less food in the refrigerator.
After graduating from Carlsbad High School, Mitchel went onto to college at Mira Costa. At Mira Costa, he expanded his horizons as a student and enjoyed political science, history, philosophy and anthropology. Mitchel left his boring job at his dad’s office and went to work as a barista at BaBa Coffee in Carlsbad; he wanted to be out with the people. While working at BaBa, Mitchel started assisting in booking bands for the live entertainment. He also played regularly at Baba. He loved this part of his job as he got to work with talented people who were often a lot older than him. Mitchel felt that Rob and Regan, and the people he worked with at Baba, were his family, not just co-workers.
When he was not working, Mitchel loved sharing the outdoors and fun times with his girlfriend Elly. Every day, Mitchel and Elly surfed, skated, hiked and did everything fun together. They both loved their dogs and it would often be Mitchel, Elly, Buddy and Grom at the beach or the park. Mitchel and Elly took an incredible trip to see the redwoods and National Parks in the spring of 2022 for a trip of a lifetime.
Mitch completed his two years at Mira Costa and was accepted to the University of California San Diego (UCSD). We are so proud of him. He was set to start full-time at the La Jolla campus in September, his band was doing well and his whole life of promise was ahead of him.
On July 13 we lost him from complications due to an allergic reaction from something he drank, and now we only ponder our loss, search for answers and treasure his memory.
Church services are August 1 at 1:00 PM at St. Patrick church in Carlsbad. A burial service will immediately follow at Eternal Hills in Oceanside. A reception will be held after the burial at Hello Betty Restaurant in Oceanside. All family, friends, and anyone who knew Mitchel are welcome. Additional information, video and photos may be found at www.dignitymemorial.com search “Mitchel”, and this is where people can post on the site.
