Naomi Daisy Young passed away at home on June 18, 2011, at age 100, surrounded by her family. Naomi was the matriarch of a family who cherished and loved her deeply. She was affectionately known to many as “Granny.”
Naomi was born November 8, 1910 in Americus, Georgia to George Lindsey and Addie Grant Lindsey. She was the fourth of six surviving children born to George and Addie. She graduated from McKay Hill School in Americus in 1926. She was senior class president.
Naomi first moved from Americus to Evanston, Ill. and then to Flushing, N.Y. In New York she met and, on April 15, 1929, married Edward Wardale Young. Naomi had two daughters, Constance and Doris. After a visit to her sister Lucille in Oceanside, Calif., Naomi moved from Bronx, N.Y. to Oceanside in 1970, where she lived for over thirty years before moving to Temecula, Calif. to live with her granddaughter.
Naomi was a woman of deep faith who was a long-time member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. While she resided in Oceanside, she was a member of Walker Chapel AME Church where she was a stewardess. She continued her fellowship at Grace AME Church in Temecula.
Naomi had a great sense of humor and enjoyed watching sports and discussing religion, politics and current events. She was very proud to be 100 and celebrated her 100th birthday with over 80 family members and friends in November 2010. This extraordinary milestone was recognized by the President and Mrs. Obama, Governor Schwarzenegger, Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer, and Representative Issa, as well as the cities of Temecula and Oceanside. The theme of her birthday celebration was “A Century of Living … A Lifetime of Loving and Giving.” Indeed, her kindness and love engulfed everyone around her and there was a very deep appreciation for the loving support and wise leadership and guidance she provided to family and friends alike. Naomi was loved by all who knew her and her absence leaves a great void in the lives of her family and friends. She will be missed greatly.
Naomi was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Doris Skinner, and her siblings Walter, Sanford, Joseph, Charles and Lucille. She is survived by her daughter Constance Perdue of Escondido, Calif.; her grandchildren Naomi (Walter Verkleij) Young of Los Angeles, Calif., Amelia Skinner of Oceanside, Denise (Kenneth) Wilson of Temecula, Linda (Robert) Patterson of Vista, Calif., Ronald (Margo) Perdue, Sr. of Bronx, N.Y.; six great grandchildren; fifteen great-great grandchildren; other family members and many friends.
