Pat was born Patsy Sue Landers on March 23, 1935 in Springfield, Missouri to Clara May and Troy Golden Landers. Her childhood years were spent playing on their big property, gathering vegetables from their victory garden, collecting eggs, milking cows and climbing trees. She also grew up performing acrobat and tap routines in adorable outfits her mother made. She continued her love of tap dancing until the end of her life.
She moved to Oceanside at age of 18 to live with her sister and brother-in-law and soon started night school. One night she went to Betty’s on the Beach on the Strand with a friend from school and met Ernie Carpenter. Soon they were dating and, after just a few months, married in December 1954 at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church. Within a year their first child Greg arrived, and they bought a home in South Oceanside and daughters Margaret and Judy were born soon after. ️They lived in the same house for the rest of their lives and often expressed gratitude for their wonderful neighborhood.
Pat worked at Palmquist School for 17 years as the health clerk. She made lifelong friends there but she was so happy when she retired. She loved not getting up at any particular time and mentioned it often. Even near the end of her life she expressed gratitude she was retired.
Pat and Ernie loved to travel, focusing on natural places and national parks throughout the United States and Canada. From Nova Scotia to Banff, from Boston to Branson, she exhaustively studied an area prior to travelling so they wouldn’t miss a thing. From hikes to bridges, waterfalls and lighthouses, they scrambled up and over rocks and hills that would intimidate much younger people, always seeking the best view.
She loved all animals, especially the many dogs in her life. She collected hearts and ducks, loved the color blue, and had an abiding appetite for margaritas, Mexican food, ice cream and anything made of dark chocolate. She loved to dance with Ernie and often at family gatherings they were the first ones on the dance floor and the last ones off. She was curious about so many things, as evidenced by drawers full of articles about health, parenting tips, corny jokes, inspirational stories, financial advice and brain games. Above all else, she loved her family. She was a devoted daughter and sister, wife and mom, nana and great nana. She was well loved by family, neighbors and friends.
Pat is predeceased by her loving husband Ernest Glenn Carpenter. She leaves behind
her son Greg Carpenter, her daughters Margaret Brookes and husband Nigel and Judith Clark and husband Michael, grandson Colin Clark, wife Kylie and great granddaughters Everly and Kennedy Clark, and grandsons Cameron Clark and Connor Clark.
