

Pearl Joan Bertics was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 10, 1929 to Polish immigrants Mary B. (Olszowy) and Stanley R. Tarkowski. She was raised and attended primary and secondary schools in Cleveland. During her early life, she worked in sales at retail businesses such as Halle Brothers department store where she discovered that she had a flair for design, decoration and gift preparation. She married John E. Bertics on April 7, 1951, and moved shortly afterwards to the southern California area, first in Vista and ultimately in Carlsbad, where she lived the last 55 years of her life. During this time, she worked in food services at a bakery, restaurant and lastly at Valley Jr. High School in Carlsbad, CA. She was well loved and had an incredible ability to befriend all the she encountered. She enjoyed music and dance, film and sports (she was an avid Padre and Charger fan!). She welcomed challenges of all sorts, from crossword puzzles to casinos. She was a dedicated member of St. Patrick's Catholic church in Carlsbad, CA, and she volunteered much of her time to the church over the years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister Joan, her mother Mary, her father Stanley, and her husband John. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra A. Dries of Santee, CA; a son, Paul J. Bertics of Madison, WI; and a granddaughter, Victoria J. Bertics of Kiel, Germany. Her Funeral Service was performed on October 9, 2010 at St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad, CA.
