Richard was born June 17, 1946 in Berkeley, California to Edward and Mary Goedert. The Goedert family moved to Oceanside when Dickie was 3 years old. He attended St. Mary’s School for 1st-8th grade. Dickie graduated from Oceanside High School with the class of 1964.
Dickie grew up playing football and baseball. He started playing Little League Baseball with his brothers and his dad, as their coach. Dickie was an outstanding athlete. He entered Mira Costa College playing baseball. He was soon drafted by the Giants at the age of 20. Dickie ended up playing for the Boston Red Sox. Later on in life, he played fast pitch softball in Oceanside and was on a travel team with his brothers.
In 1973, Dickie married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Hopper. They had two children, Samantha and Matthew. Each are married, and have three children of their own. His grandchildren were dearly loved and they all cherish the time they had with their Papa.
Dickie had two brothers, Jimmy and Peter, and two sisters, Mary and Liz. He was an uncle to 7 nieces, 6 nephews, 8 great nieces and 16 great nephews. Dickie was a great great uncle to 1 niece and 1 nephew.
Dickie was a dedicated father to his children, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them. He spent hours on baseball and soccer fields, basketball gyms, ice rinks, and pool decks supporting his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews playing sports. He was a proud and wonderful dad, Papa, and uncle.
Dickie worked in many fields before settling at the City of Carlsbad as an engineer for 22 years. It didn’t take him long to learn how to relax and enjoy retirement. You could catch him mowing the lawn or sitting in his rocking chair in the front yard having a cold one. He made friends with everyone on his street and his friends and family would often stop by to visit with him. He enjoyed having a good old time and talking about the good old days! He loved traveling by train and often took his trailer camping with his family and friends. These were great memories for all who shared them. Dickie was one of a kind, with so much love in his heart for so many. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. May his gentle soul be in the presence of his savior, Jesus Christ for eternity.
