November 24, 1920--August 4, 2014
Rita passed away peacefully at the age of 93, surrounded by her family. She was born in Sheldon, NY, the youngest of 10 children born to Alice (Felton) & John Trauscht. From an early age, Rita had a mind of her own and dreams for her future. Against her father’s wishes, she completed high school and graduated from SUNY @ Buffalo, with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. At 23, she joined the US Army Nurses Corps, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, she married Robert Seymour, a US Marine from Buffalo, NY. They had 4 children and were married for 46 years before “Bob” died. While raising her children, Rita enjoyed a long career as a Public Health Nurse with the County of San Diego Health Department, before retiring in 1977. During retirement, Rita was active in her community as a devoted volunteer with the Red Cross, Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, St. Francis Catholic Church (as a Eucharistic Minister), her local library, and the American Cancer Society. Rita was an avid reader, and enjoyed other activities including crochet, Bingo, Bible Study, and Padres baseball. But her biggest joy in life was spending time and making memories with her children and grandchildren.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her 9 siblings, her husband Robert in 1996, and her companion of 14 years, William McCarthy. She is survived by: daughter Deborah (& Bryan) Nazareth, sons Mark (& Cheri) Seymour, Randall (& Melissa) Seymour, and Brian (& Sharyn) Seymour, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
